Anti-flea medications on your pet can lower the number of fleas significantly, but this method can take several months to be completed. If you need faster results, you can use flea bombs or flea foggers. These potent, toxic tools can quickly kill a population of fleas in any room if they are used correctly. To be effective, the room has to be entirely sealed off, with air vents being covered and airways surrounding doors and windows being sealed. This can take up to five hours do for each room, depending on how much furniture needs to be protected and how open the chamber is. 

Dog fleas can also be repelled through use of natural products, such as Citronella, Lemongrass and Cedar. If applied properly, they can form a repelling barrier to prevent fleas from getting in. If you use these in conjunction with flea bombs, you can effectively remove living fleas from a home.

I was unsuccessful in getting rid of the fleas my cat and dog had on my own. I went to the vet and bought one of their treatments. They gave me advantage for both of them. It's the kind you squeeze on their skin right behind their heads. I did this at about 1pm today. I'm still noticing a little scratching from both of them. How long should this treatment take to kill the fleas? And if this doesn't work what should my next step be?
PS I did treat my house so they shouldn't be getting reinfected from the furniture or anything.

How can I get rid of fleas? If you are a pet lover, chances are, you have asked that question at least once! Animals are lots of fun and wonderful companions, but fleas are something nobody wants. Especially your pets!

Unfortunately, pets can attract fleas, no matter how 'clean' your pet or your home is! Some areas of the country are worse than others when it comes to flea infestations. Damp areas or areas that never get extremely cold in the winter (and kill the larva outside) are especially susceptible.

So how does one get fleas off their pet and out of their home? Well, because there are some amazing products available today, it is actually a lot simpler than it used to be! First, get into the habit of vacuuming often. And place a flea collar in the vacuum bag. Vacuuming helps to keep fleas out of your carpets. You can also sprinkle Borax (in the detergent aisle of the store) into your carpets, brush it in with a broom, and let it sit in your carpets for 24 hours before vacuuming. This is non toxic to children and pets, yet will kill the fleas and their larva. This also works on hardwood floors, the Borax sinking down into the cracks and killing any larva or eggs down there as well.

For an infestation in your home to be wiped out, you must take further steps. Wash your pet's bedding on the 'hot' cycle. This should kill anything living in there. Buy some 'bombs' at your local hardware. These are fogger products that, when set off, envelop your home in a flea killing fog. Trust me, the fleas will be G-O-N-E ! Read the directions carefully on the package however, to be certain you are doing this in the correct way. Remove all people and pets from the area. Cover fishtanks. Close up the house. After 2 to 3 hours, you can return, open windows to ventilate everything for about a half hour, then resume life as it was before the fleas. A good product will not leave a residue.

Wash your dog. If you do not want to, or can not do this, take him to a local grooming shop. They will be glad to do it for you.

Get some Frontline flea killer product for your dog. It comes in various sizes, for various sizes of dogs, so be sure to get the correct size for your particular dog. If you have any cats, treat them with Frontline as well, but only use Frontline for Cats, as the dog product will poison a cat. Be sure to read all the directions on the package before applying it, to be certain you are doing it correctly. This product works amazingly well, but only if you apply it correctly. It is placed on the dog's shoulder blades, directly on the skin (not on top of his hair!) and travels throughout the dog via natural skin oils. Therefore, read the directions on how soon you can apply it after bathing your dog, and follow the instructions closely. Frontline also claims to be waterproof, which is a great thing for those of us who have water-loving, swimming hounds!

Frontline is designed to be applied once a month. By sticking to your Frontline schedule, vacuuming more oftan, and maybe an occasional 'bombing' of your home, your life can be free of fleas.

Have you considered using flea and tick spray on your dog or cat but hesitated because you didn't want to pay for the medication, you weren't sure it was safe for your pet or your family, or maybe you just didn't know if you needed it in your area, for your pet.

Well, trust me... a good flea and tick spray (or flea drops, which are a little easier to use) can be a very good investment.

There's nothing like sitting around on the couch with your dog, enjoying some snacks and a movie when you reach over to pet her and notice creepy-crawly fleas scurrying along her skin. If that doesn't get you reaching for Advantage flea drops or Frontline Plus flea and tick spray, I don't know what will!

In fact, this happened to me with my guide dog puppy, Kera. I asked our local Guide Dog Program coordinators what I should do, and they recommended Frontline Plus for dogs.

We used it and it worked right away.

You get a little vial of the medication and you just put a few drops along the dogs backbone and it spreads over the body, and is retained in the skin, where it is effective for a month.

This was super. After that I didn't worry about taking Kera to the park, or on long walks through the woods.

We still checked her out to make sure there were no ticks hiding, but we didn't see any. After a while, my husband and I were more worried about the ticks getting on us than on our dog.

So, we were using flea and tick spray, and it seemed easy. Kera was happy and felt good, and my husband and I didn't have to get the itches (imaginary or otherwise) when we sat down to enjoy her company.

I just found a flea on my 12 lb. dog. All I have is advantage for cats. Can I use this on my dog? I'm broke and can't go and buy some for my dog right now.
